TikTok has announced that it would be increasing the maximum duration of videos that may be uploaded to the site from five minutes to 10 minutes.

Analysts believe that the move represents the Chinese giant’s effort to compete with Google’s video-sharing site YouTube. According to TikTok, this is the highest increase in the duration of films that the company has revealed thus far.

The corporation extended the maximum duration of movies to three minutes in July of this year. The news of the upgrade was sent to some users through a notice inside the app, according to social media consultant and analyst Matt Navarra. He also said that TikTok has been exploring upload time constraints of three and five minutes with authors for some time now.

TikTok has devised a '10-minute strategy' to compete with Google's YouTube.

It’s worth mentioning that, with the expanded upload duration, TikTok will not only compete with Instagram Reels, but it will also compete with YouTube, which is a significant competitor.

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, lengthier films are simpler to monetize and keep visitors on the site for a longer period of time.

Matt Navarra argues that TikTok may benefit from a separate space in-app for longer form video, since it doesn’t sit well in the vertical stream with shorter content that consumers are accustomed to scrolling through at a rapid pace, according to Navarra.

When TikTok first began in 2016, users were only able to post videos that were no more than 15 seconds in length. To encourage more producers to use the site, the duration limit was eventually lifted to up to 60 seconds in order to attract more viewers.

As previously stated by TikTok earlier this month, the company is also working on methods to grade and limit material on the network based on its intended audience’s age.

The business hopes to do this by preventing pornographic material from reaching young consumers via social media. The platform has stated that it is now investigating several methods of preventing adult-rated material from accessing accounts that belong to younger users, according to the company.

Social media sites have been under intense criticism recently because of their regulations protecting the well-being and safety of underage users on their services.

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media firms have also implemented additional safeguards to keep children and teenagers safe on their services.
